Fionn Griffiths
She did it! Fionn cracked the Downhill Top 5 finally, and exactly when she needed to! This past weekend’s World Championships was incredible from the start. So perfectly organized, even the weather seemed to be cooperating with the riders. The crowds flocked by the thousands all week supporting their favourite riders/team in practice.
“It was incredible. The crowds were already lining the track for qualifying on Thursday morning”. Fionn recalls. “Even then I could hear fan screaming my name my entire run. It really set the stage for how supportive the crowds would be all weekend.”
Friday night’s 4X was the start of the show. With the event showing live on BBC in England the tension was high and the crowds were fanatical.
Qualifying earlier in the week showed just how close the racing was going to be – the top 7 women were all within 1.5 seconds of one another. All the heats were intense. Fionn drew Melissa Buhl and Racheal Seydoux in the first round. Both Buhly and Seydoux are no strangers to the podium and everyone expected some great racing.
Straight out of the gate the fans were not disappointed. Rachel and Buhly both lent on Fee and gave her the squeeze. She was stuck in 3rd before the 1st jump. But that wasn’t going to stop our Fee.
She quickly recovered and began her quest for the finals. By the 2nd turn Fionn had caught up to Melissa and tried a quick, cheeky inside line. No joy. Buhly was ready for it
and even a few elbows couldn’t get Fee into that vital 2nd place. 3rd corner Fee saw her shot: a tough inside line that could be just enough to get in front. Fee went for it but luck wasn’t with her and
she slid out in the berm. Tough break for Fee who was left to finish the heat in 3rd and not advance into the semi finals. She finished 9th in the event.
However, the disappointment from the 4X was just fuel for Sunday morning’s DH final. Fee was ready. Her head was in it, her body felt good and her top 10 qualifying time guaranteed her plenty of attention from the attending BBC camera crews.
Fee was in top form. She knew she had to be fast in the top to stay with the leading ladies and she was.
She rode hard and fast, a few near misses in the open, rocky top are proof of that. She came into the woods flat out and made up time there.
Unfortunately,a little venture through the tapes on a tough corner slowed her down a bit. But Fee wasn’t ready to give up. She came through the split down on the leaders time, but rode the bottom section so smooth that she made up more than 2 seconds on any other lady in the event!
And it was enough. She came down and immediately took her place in the Hot Seat. 9 more riders to go. Fee held her seat for as long as possible, but was knocked out by the new World Champion, Sabrina Jonnier. Her time was fast enough to keep her in the Top 5!
Congratulations to Fionn on a great weekend of racing!
Brian Lopes
A day after his 36th birthday Lopes turned his efforts to his 15th World Championship race in Fort William, Scotland. Having qualified 3rd, he formulated his race strategy in the new longer 4X course.
As the finals approached the pressure was relieved a bit by a surprise elimination of Michal Prokop early on and a mechanical by Jared Graves.
In the semi-finals Lopes slipped a pedal coming out of the gate with Roger Rindernkecht, Alvarez & Tomas Slavik. Brian quickly found himself off the back, having to create some passing situations to insure his seating in the finals.
First pass was to Alvarez (SPN) causing some fun “awes & ooohs” from the hundreds of mountain bike fans, then came Slavik (CZE). Brian didn’t’ catch Rinderkecht who came across the finish line first, but it did earn him a spot at the finals.
In the finals Brian took off like a bandit taking the lead, Rindernkecht & Meijer collided with Slavik barely missing the crash. Slavik chased Lopes down the course but Lopes was too far ahead. Brian crossed the finish line to his 4th 4Cross World Championship title with arms extended & a full smile!!!

FIONN JUST MISSES PODIUM AT THE FIRST WORLD CUP
VIGO, Spain: A rough and tumble weekend leaves Fionn with mixed emotions after finishing 0.24 seconds off the podium at the first round of the World Cup in Vigo, Spain. Training was mint all weekend. Fionn, who loves to jump, came down the hill grinning from ear to ear as she cleaned jump after jump on the dusty track. Trying to step it up a notch late Saturday however, Fionn had a pretty heavy crash into a tree which she walked away from confidently before using the adrenaline it gave her to her advantage and being the first woman to jump the massive doubles on the finish straight. Things were looking good for Fee.
Qualifying - not as smooth. Fionn crashed twice in her run leaving her back in the field in 16th position so Lee was hard at work for the evening building wheels and preparing Fionn’s Norco for racing. However there was still time to slip out and watch the 4X. With Fionn not racing in order to concentrate on her coming DH race run, the entire team was course-side enjoying the crowds and racing on the new style 4X. Racing was good with Gee Atherton winning the men’s and Anneke Beerten taking the women’s.
Race morning looked grim. With heavy cloud cover and threats of rain all weekend, it was no surprise when storms started brewing early Sunday morning. But racing doesn’t stop with a bit of rain and riders practiced as usual, praying for a dry race run. Racing was much better for Fee. Having a fairly clean run and only making a few mistakes on course Fionn sat in the hot seat for what must have seemed like an eternity with her time of 3:06.94. However, when the dust settled and the times came in, Fionn was on the wrong side of three riders (all on the same second) and was left off the podium with a tight 6th place finish. Sabrina Jonnier dominated the event with a stunning time of 2:52.72.

LISBOA Portugal – The stage was set.......
Fionn was tearing the course up all day in her usual style. Her first run out she jumped every obstacle on course and left the rest of the women’s field behind trying to get their heads around the daunting track. “I just wanted to get out their and hit everything first run so that I didn’t psyche myself out too much over the jumps.”
Qualifying came quickly. After only 4 practice runs riders were shuttled to the top to battle it out for a place in the finals. 10 women and 25 men would go through. Fionn used her experience here and took a steady one, knowing how difficult a race run can be on this course. Helen Gaskell qualified fastest in the women’s with Fionn only a few seconds back in 4th. Racing was looking good.
Fionn charged into her run and was on course for a fast time when she had an unlucky front wheel drift that ended in a crash down the stairs. “I’m not sure what happened really,” Fionn recalls. “My front wheel was drifting a bit and I knew I was going to have to work to get it back, but then it just stopped dead and I went over the bars and dove straight down the next staircase! I think I may have hit the cameraman!! I lost loads of time getting back up the marble with my SPD’s, but I pulled it back together and made up enough time on the rest of the track to keep a top 5 placing. I am gutted though. Not the win I was hoping for.

Flying Fionn takes second at Sea Otter! Britsh 1 – 2 Podium!
MONTEREY, CA – The 1st international DH race of the year was a huge success for British female riders Rachel Atherton and Fionn Griffiths who finished 1st and 2nd respectively at the 2007 Sea Otter Classic. Fionn, who has been working hard training in the off-season, was hot on Rachel’s tail finishing about a second off the young rider’s winning time. “I feel the race went pretty well,” remarks Fionn, “It was quite windy in my race run so I was focused on tucking and sprinting anywhere I possibly could. I had a pretty clean run and only really made one little mistake with a cross rut but it couldn’t have cost me too much time. I’m happy with the result. 1st International race of the year - 1st podium.” Fionn and Rachel bested the current World Champion, Sabrina Jonnier who finished 4th just behind one of the US’ finest, Melissa Buhl.
The Sea Otter Classic season opener is renowned as one of the season’s easiest tracks to ride, yet hardest track to race. Bike and tire choice are key components to a podium result. Most riders opt for a lighter overall bike since a full 8 inches of travel is seldom used on this type of course, however Fionn’s full Norco Team DH race rig seemed the tool for the job. With a semi-slick Kenda tire front and rear combo Fionn was rolling fast and sprinting hard through this lung-burning course. “No matter how much you warm up or how much you prepare for Sea Otter, this track will make you suffer.” Fionn remembers, laughing. “If you try to pace yourself you won’t finish well, yet if you go too hard your legs and lungs will blow up before the flat finish sprint. It is just sprint interval after sprint interval. You can see the hurt in people’s eyes as they come across the finish line and you can tell who’s been doing there training in the off-season!”
Fionn sights are now set on the 1st round of the Nationals this coming weekend in Innerleithan, Scotland where she will meet Rachel, Helen Gaskell, and the rest of the UK’s top women before the World Cup Opener in Vigo, Spain in 3 weeks time.

First Race of the Season sees Griffiths Racing riders on a double podium!
Innerleithan, Scotland – The 1st race of 2007 was a success for the whole team with both Jaymie and Fionn Griffiths standing on the podium! The ladies put in an awesome weekend of riding and training although they were without proper DH rigs due to some kind of shipping hold up. However, this didn’t stop either of them from racing! Fionn spent the night leading up to the race playing in the garage transforming both her Norco 4XXXX and Norco EXC (Cross Country) bikes into DH race rigs – or as close to that as she could! Both bikes turned out to be great and held up to the abuse.
Race day looked promising. With sunny blue skies and hour-long lift lines, Fionn spent the morning putting in practice runs with fellow World Cup rider, Helen Gaskell. Both ladies were surprised at Fionn’s abilities to keep up to Helen on the rough track with her tiny bike. By racing time, both Fionn and Helen were excited to put themselves and their bikes up against the clock. Both of these fast ladies were curious who’s bike/rider combo was going to edge the other out for the win. Helen put in an amazing race run, however, an unlucky front flat 20seconds into Fionn’s run saw her skidding and sliding her way down the track. She managed to keep up right and was only one position back from Helen at the finish, despite her bad luck. The weekend was not over though. Miss Jaymie Mart put in an awesome race run getting every last millimeter of travel out of her Norco EXC and just nudging Fionn out of 2nd place. Congrats to both ladies on an excellent start to the season!

ONE/Kenda BMX Racing Team
For years ONE Bicycles has been a leading team in Europe. 3 years ago ONE came up with great concept - a world team. Top riders from all over the world in one team to get brand recognition. Today we see more teams following this concept and call their team a world team.
ONE and KENDA are now working towards the 2008 Olympics. With a team of top riders from all over the world ONE and Kenda hope to see as many riders of their team in China to attend the Olympics.
A commercial team will always be more interesting for companies, especially in Europe and towards the Olympics. Commercial teams get more exposure by using the official team gear. There are no limits for publicity. This is something you won't see with national teams, where there is a restriction for publicity. This is the major reason why ONE Kenda, along with some other big teams in the world joined BMXTTO, the world wide Trade Team organisation.
In the coming weeks we will announce the riders that are part of the ONE KENDA BMX Racing Team.

Kona Sleepless in the Saddle Venue and Date Change
Events beyond there control have forced Kona's Global 24hr organisers to move the event to the August Bank Holiday weekend. Oh, and the venue's changed too...
The event was scheduled for August 13/14th at Trentham, but this has had to be changed because of the massive redevelopment at Trentham. The Monkey Park that they've built there is nearly done, but this has meant the loss of many of the tracks the race used to use - and though Trentham tried to work around it, even building new trails, it was felt that the quality of trails left would be disappointing to riders who'd been there before.
So, the event is moving to Catton Park between Burton on Trent and Lichfield. This country house venue has seen NPS events held there and is nearly as easy to get to as Trentham was.
With the new venue, though, had to come a date change. So the new date for Sleepless is August 27/28th i.e. the August Bank Holiday weekend. At least you'll now get the Monday off to sleep.
Pat's very sorry about the venue and the date change, but we know that he's been checking out venues for months, just in case something like this happened. We know that whatever the venue, though, Pat'll pull off a great event. Now that it's all been sorted out, entry forms should be with us in ten days or so.

With the folding, lightweight XC's and the wired, CAP Ply casing with bead insert DH's, that's twenty-eight Kenda Premium Tyres from John Tomac.
